The September 11th attack
Mainland mail to start showing up Monday

Advertiser Staff

Mail from the Mainland is expected to start showing up in Hawai'i mailboxes by Monday.

A cargo plane loaded with mail was expected to arrive Thursday night but was delayed and is now expected to arrive this morning from New York after stopping in California.

"That's going to be our very first shipment of mail coming to Hawai'i since Monday," according to U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman Felice Broglio.

Some mail from the Mainland is being delivered now, even without five days of air mail shipments, because catalogs, credit-card offers and other less time-sensitive mail is often sent by sea.

The cargo plane scheduled to arrive today is expected to bring in about 100,000 pounds of mail. "That's the average we get everyday on a normal day," Broglio said.

A Federal Aviation Administration ban on passenger flights carrying cargo and mail in wake of Tuesday terrorist attacks on the Mainland delayed both interisland mail and mail between Hawai'i and the Mainland.
