Islanders are contributing to funds helping victims and family members affected by Tuesday's terrorist attack at unprecedented levels.
Cassandra Ely, spokesperson for the Red Cross, said that as of 5 p.m. yesterday, $170,000 had been collected in Hawai'i for the organization's Disaster Relief Fund.
"It's pretty amazing," Ely said. "Nationwide, Red Cross has never received this much."
On a nationwide basis, so much is coming in that the Red Cross is not releasing a running total, Ely said. The Hawai'i chapter of the American Red Cross has sent Glenn Lockwood, disaster director for Hawai'i, to New York to serve as an assistant director of relief operations there.
Trudie China, spokesperson for Aloha United Way, which along with the Hawai'i Community Foundation has established a September 11th Fund, said donations are coming from many different points, and there is no running total yet.
The Aloha United Way and Hawai'i Community Foundation each have donated $25,000 to the fund.
