The September 11th attack
Passengers face new procedures at airports

Advertiser Staff

To ensure passenger safety, the Federal Aviation Administration has imposed strict security procedures at airports.

Before you go

Get travel updates via the U.S. State Department for up-to-the-minute information including worldwide alerts or advisories at travel.state.gov

The site provides location of U.S. embassies or consulates, immigration practices, health conditions, political disturbances, unusual currency and entry regulations, crime and security information.

Travelers are advised to:

• Arrive at airports at least three hours before flight time for international flights and 90 minutes before domestic flights. You may encounter long lines at check-in counters and airport screening stations.

• Proceed directly to check-in counters. Curbside check-in is discontinued.

• Go solo. If someone is dropping you off at the airport, they must stay with the vehicle at all times, and not leave it unattended, even for a moment. Only ticketed passengers will be allowed to proceed past airport screeners to catch their flights.

• Have a picture ID such as a driver's license, passport, or government-issued identification. Make your reservation in the exact name that appears on the identification you plan on presenting at the airport. If your name has recently changed and the name on your ticket and your I.D. are different, bring documentation of the change (e.g., a marriage certificate or court order). If traveling with an e-ticket, you must produce a copy of your e-ticket receipt when you check in. You must present the credit card you use to buy an e-ticket at check-in.

• Keep your identification handy, as you may be asked after entering the gate area to produce it for airport or airline personnel. (If you have an e-ticket, you must go to the check-in counters to receive a boarding pass and go through the airport screening procedures.)

• Keep your luggage and carry-on luggage with you at all times before arriving at the airport and while in the terminal. It is advisable to minimize your carry-on items, to expedite the new security procedures.

• Do not accept packages or materials from strangers.

• Do not carry sharp instruments (i.e., letter openers, knives, box cutters, scissors, etc,) in carry-on luggage. They will be confiscated at airport screening stations.

• Check in at the airport, even if you are traveling with a tour group or cruise group. You will no longer be allowed to check in for flights at hotels or at cruise terminals.

• See any suspicious activity or see unattended bags? Contact appropriate personnel immediately.

• Carry medications in your carry-on bags.

• Hold onto baggage claim check. Some airports may elect to provide more security in the baggage claim area.
