State offers dietary supplements

By Adrienne Ancheta

If your family is among those who qualify under income guidelines, a free calcium-boost and protein pack await your claim.

The state Department of Health is inviting pregnant mothers, new mothers and families with children under five years old to apply for the Federal Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women. The program provides nutrition education and foods such as milk, peanut butter and iron-fortified cereal to families meeting income and residency requirements.

Families of two with incomes of less than $2,060 a month are eligible, and the income limit increases $535 a month for each additional family member.

The program can assist 35,000 families each month but serves only 32,200. Call 586-8175 on O'ahu or (888) 820-6425 on Neighbor Islands.
