The Left Lane
A fairy-tale world all packaged
A fairy-tale world
The new "Story in a Box" is a perfect combination of reading and play, all in one portable little package. Created by Canadian illustrator Keri Smith, each mini box contains a book, paper dolls with press-on outfits and accessories, a wardrobe in which to store the dolls and clothes, and a pull-down/pop-up scene. Young readers may start with the traditional fairy tales, but the free play is sure to spark an endless array of imaginative subplots. Stories available: "Cinderella" and "The Princess and the Pea," suitable for ages 6-10, for $9.95 each. www.chroniclebooks.com/Kids

Psssst! Wanna try a different museum?
There's more to Hawai'i's museum landscape than the well-known organizations, such as the Bishop Museum or Honolulu Academy of Arts. A new guidebook, "Hawai'i Museums and Cultural Attractions Directory," put out by the Hawai'i Museums Association, lists them by the dozen. Eight dozen, to be exact not only on O'ahu, but the Neighbor Islands.
Each listing includes all the particulars, address, hours, admissions, phone numbers, etc. The directory was designed for travel planners or tour guides, but copies are available to anyone for $8 each (or $3 for Hawai'i Museums Association or Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau members). Write the Hawai'i Museums Association at P.O. Box 4125, Honolulu, HI 96812, or call (808) 988-7814.
