The September 11th attack
Jackson recording fund-raiser, networks planning a telethon

We "again" are the world, according to Michael Jackson, who is assembling an all-star cast for a benefit single expected to raise $50 million for terrorist attack victims. "What More Can I Give?" is a hymn-like piano ballad written, produced and financed by Jackson. It could be in stores within a month.

Michael Jackson will be joined by other major artists in his project.

Destiny's Child, the Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Britney Spears and Carlos Santana are lining up for it.

Publicist Susan Blond quotes Jackson as saying he hopes the song "will unite the whole world." (The Jackson-led "We Are the World" raised $65 million for Africa's hungry.)

Executive producer Marc Schaffel says contributors are recording in Los Angeles and elsewhere. "We are working around the clock," Schaffel said. "Michael's aim is to stop the violence. Since Columbine, he's (thought) of doing something like this."

Meanwhile, ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox are organizing a television industry benefit broadcast for Friday night to raise money for relief and recovery from the terrorist attacks.

The goal is to show the planned two-hour special on as many broadcast and cable networks as possible simultaneously, according to industry executives, but plans were sketchy at press time. Such an event is believed to have no precedent within the television industry.

It's not clear yet whether the networks would set up their own organization to collect donations or steer funds to an established group. The broadcast, which would salute heroism, would undoubtedly feature many entertainers.

Other entertainment industry figures are reaching out, too. The Screen Actors Guild pledged $50,000 to a New York assistance fund. Clear Channel Worldwide, an entertainment promotion and marketing company, has started the ClearChannel.com Relief Fund to benefit victims and families. Earth, Wind & Fire announced a $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross.
