Rolovich making trip but will play only if Chang gets injured

The University of Hawai'i football team's 60-player travel roster will be finalized tomorrow morning, but it appears only three quarterbacks will make the trip to Reno, Nev., for Saturday's game against Nevada.

While starter Tim Chang and seniors Nick Rolovich and Jared Flint are on the travel roster, Rolovich will be used only if Chang is seriously injured and the Warriors have a chance to win the game. Otherwise, Rolovich is on track to redshirt this season. Flint, who did not play last season because of a shoulder injury, does not have an available redshirt season. He also serves as the holder.

Shawn Withy-Allen, a junior, apparently will not make the trip. Freshman Jeff Rhode is redshirting.

UH coach June Jones said he has not decided if defensive tackle Mike Iosua will be included on the travel roster.

Iosua, who is recovering from a sprained right shoulder and hyper-extended right knee, said he is healthy enough to play.

But Jones said Iosua probably needs another week to rehabilitate his injuries. "I'm of the mind, if you take him, you play him," said Jones, who believes he might be tempted to use Iosua if he is on the sideline.

Because Nevada is a predominantly passing team, Iosua could be replaced by Houston Ala, who usually moves to defensive tackle when the Warriors are in pass coverage.

But Iosua is a co-captain, and the coaches believe his presence could provide inspiration.

"It's a tough call," Jones said. "We'll have to wait and see."

Flight risk: Although the Warriors will travel by charter, Jones, who is recovering from injuries suffered in a car accident in February, will "probably stand up most of the way."

This will be his second trip to the Mainland since the accident. He stood most of the way during a trip to California in June.

"I still can't sit that long," said Jones, who experiences neck and back pain.

He said he had no problems with the flights to and from Maui for the Sept. 8 game against Montana, and he even was fine standing on the sidelines during the game.

"But I was really sore for the next two days" after the game, he said. "Maybe the adrenaline of the game wore off."

A happy end: Joe Correia said he welcomed the chance to return to defensive end, where he played the past three seasons.

"I feel like I'm back in my little fishpond," he said.

Correia, a fifth-year senior, moved to strong-side linebacker in spring practice. But after injuries depleted the defensive line, he recently moved to right end. If Iosua cannot play on Saturday, Correia will start.

The left-handed Correia said he prefers to play on the right side because he is able to place his left hand on the ground when he is in a three-point stance. "I can really push off from that side," he said.

Correia weighed 246 pounds as a defensive end last year. Now, his weight fluctuates between 238 and 242. Correia, who can run 40 yards in 4.7 seconds, is one of the strongest Warriors. He can bench press 225 pounds 38 times, behind middle linebacker Chris Brown (42 225-pound lifts) and left end Laanui Correa (39 225-pound lifts).
