Hale'iwa set to stage free taro festival

The heritage and healthful benefits of taro will be celebrated at the Waialua Taro Festival from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Lili'uokalani Protestant Church, 66-090 Kamehameha Highway in Hale'iwa.

The free festival will begin with the introduction of the Aloha Festival Royal Court at 9 a.m. The event will include hula, chants, poi pounding games and art displays.

Entertainment will be by Red Degree with special guest Oshen, Kamaki & Alika, Tropical Wine, Island Heart and The Lorenzo Ohana.

People are invited to visit the voyaging canoe Hokule'a at Hale'iwa Harbor. Transportation from the festival grounds will be provided.

Event sponsors are Hui Kalo 'O Waialua, Aloha Festivals, Kamehameha Schools and Queen Lili'uokalani Children's Center.
