FUN-RAISER: Kapi'iolani Community College's "Ho'okipa 2001," a benefit for the Culinary and Hospitality Department, will be held from 6 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel's Monarch Room. The food-laden event originally was to be held in the spring, but was postponed till the fall because of the teachers' strike.
Organizer Kelvin Ro (formerly of Kahala Moon, now on the KCC staff) says the benefit already is a 500-seat sell-out, because so many bought table seating well in advance. Lawn and lanai grazing seats remain; admission is $100 ($70 tax-deductible). Last year's party netted $100,000 and offered superb samplings of appetizers, entrees and desserts prepared by the future chefs of Hawai'i ...
Danny Kaleikini will emcee and offer the pule; Robert Cazimero and Friends will perform (he's hoping to acquire the services of Marlene Sai, but she has not yet been confirmed) ...
AROUND 'N' ABOUT: Randy Hongo is among the Hawai'i contingent in Atlantic City for tomorrow's Miss America Pageant. He said that outgoing Miss America Angela Perez Baraquio danced a hula to "Hawaiian Lullaby" in one of the preliminary events and "it was nice to hear Robert Cazimero's voice (on the recording)." Outgoing Miss Hawai'i Billie Takaki is there, too, to cheer on competing Miss Hawai'i Denby Dung, and they both danced hula to "Pearly Shells" at a post-contest gathering. Attendance is somewhat down, said Hongo, a result of last week's tragedy. En route to Atlantic City, he paused in the Big Apple to see son Andrew, who lives and works in New York and is safe but still reeling from the attacks on the World Trade Center ...
By the way, our Island pageant winners (Miss Hawai'i USA Juliette Lighter and Miss Hawai'i Denby Dung) have at least one thing in common. And no, it's not the tiare. They've been strutting about in Ferragamo shoes, courtesy the Ferragamo folks here ...
ITEMIZATIONS: Saint Louis School will be among the first non-professional companies to stage "Footloose," the Broadway musical based on the 1984 film, but here's the key reason: the school got production rights with the help of alumnus Dean Pitchford, who did the original screenplay and co-authored the music for the work. The show opens in March 2002, with Kyle Kakuno directing ...
DisGuyz, still trying to release its "Our Nation in Song" tribute, is getting help from Olinda Road folks here. The big hang-up: It'll take two weeks to press the CD on the Mainland (faster here but costlier) ...
And Daniel Ho and Sachi Mayo have recorded "Forever Yours," their song of hope and unity, which you can download at danielho.com/foreveryours.html ...
If you've been to the Diamond Head Grill (previously David Paul's Diamond Head Grill) recently, you might have noticed that stunning Diamond Head painting at the head of the stairway. It's the work of Maui artist Jan Kaspryzycki, whose works have been shown at Abacus in Chinatown. Kaspryzycki (paintings), Steve Smeltzer (ceramic and bronze pieces) and Victor Holmes (wood-turned bowls and furniture) will open a new gallery in upcountry Makawao shortly; Kaspryzycki's daughter, Lisa (multi-media art), will also be showcased ...
