The September 11th attack
Kaua'i passes resolution in support of war goals

LIHU'E, Kaua'i — The Kaua'i County Council yesterday passed a resolution in support of President Bush's anti-terrorism initiatives.

The council voted on the resolution as Bush addressed the nation yesterday afternoon.

The measure condemns terrorism and "supports the president of the United States as he works with his national security team to defend against additional attacks and find the perpetrators to bring them to justice."

The council urged public support of relief efforts with both financial contributions and blood donations, and asked residents not to denounce individuals or groups on the basis of ethnicity, religion or political affiliation.

Council Chairman Ron Kouchi, meanwhile, has asked Mayor Maryanne Kusaka to convene a local task force to address the economic and security issues raised by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

"Although seemingly far away in geography, changes that will occur as a result of these horrific events will cause significant and lasting impacts to the entire social and economic fabric of our island for both resident and visitor alike," Kouchi said in a letter to Kusaka.

Some of the issues, Kouchi said, are increased security, higher costs of travel, tourism marketing adjustments and finding the money for increased marketing.
