Maui man killed crossing highway

KAHULUI, Maui — A 27-year-old man was killed Wednesday night while running across Haleakala Highway about a mile uphill of Hana Highway.

Police said Carl A. Vitch II of Makawao was struck by a 1998 Honda Accord headed uphill at about 7:15 p.m. The driver of the car, a 26-year-old Kula man, suffered minor injuries.

There have been 17 traffic fatalities in Maui County this year compared with 15 at this time last year.


Power failure hits Big Island

HILO, Hawai'i — An early morning power failure yesterday affected 10,000 Big Island homes and businesses.

The failure occurred at 1:02 a.m. after a shutdown at the Hawaii Electric Light Co. plant in the Kanoelehua Industrial Area. HELCO spokesman Jay Ignacio said the outage affected parts of Hilo, Kona, Puna and other areas.


Public Lands Day project Sept. 29

KOKE'E, Kaua'i — Volunteers will celebrate National Public Lands Day on Sept. 29 by working on the Ditch Trail in Koke'e State Park.

Unity rally today at UH-Hilo campus

HILO, Hawai'i — A unity rally in response to last week's terrorist attacks will be held at noon today at the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Campus Center courtyard.

The program is intended to bring "the campus community together," said Alyson Kakugawa-Leong, director of university publications. The event is sponsored by the UHH Student Association and the college administration.

Also at noon today, the Hawai'i Community College group Global Hope will hold a forum on "a measured response" to the attacks. The forum will take place at the Mo'okini Library lanai.
