OIA limits seating for Aloha Stadium games

Advertiser Staff

Only the mauka sideline seats will be open to spectators for tonight's O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference football game between Kahuku and Castle, OIA football coordinator Richard Townsend said.

The move is purely for economic reasons, Townsend said, and not related to the upgraded security at the stadium in wake of last week's terrorist attacks.

The stadium announced Wednesday that there is a ban on bringing in bags.

Townsend said he does not know how much the OIA will save by having the makai sideline seats and end zones closed to the public. The league will reconsider opening more sections later, such as when Kahuku plays Wai'anae on Oct. 27, and the playoffs. Low attendance has forced the league to seek cost-cutting measures.

While spectators will be on one side of the stadium, the teams will still remain on opposite sides of the field.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu will keep most sections open as usual for tomorrow's doubleheader.
