Planning for tomorrow's first Kawaiaha'o Songfest at Kawaiaha'o Church began months ago, back when the purpose "was really just to celebrate our faith," said the Rev. James Fung, senior pastor of the church.
But in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks on America, organizers have modified the 4 p.m. program to include a patriotic hymn and a prayer, among other things, in recognition of the disaster.
"The Kawaiaha'o Song-fest is dedicated to the brave Americans who courageously gave their lives in heroic rescue efforts in the aftermath of the tragedy in New York City on Sept. 11," Fung said.
The songfest will comprise about a dozen groups, including the Kawaiaha'o Choir, Kawaiaha'o Youth Performing Ensemble, Kawaiolaonapukanileo Vocal Ensemble, Hawai'i Youth Opera Chorus, Keolani Women's Ensemble, Malia Ka'ai and the Windward Brass.
The event is free, but Fung said donations for the American Red Cross will be accepted, and all donations will be matched by the church. For more information, call 532-1257.
