Western New Mexico sweeps UH-Hilo

Tamara Goodliffe had nine kills and Dana Deitrich eight to lead Western New Mexico past the University of Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-25, 30-28, 30-23, in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match at Silver City, N.M.

Western New Mexico is 7-6 overall and 1-0 in the Pacific West. Hilo fell to 5-6 and 0-3 in the conference.

Sara Pilgreen had 13 kills and five digs, while Emily Hutchinson recorded seven kills for Hilo. Heidi Fabritz had 10 digs.

The two teams play again today at 7 p.m.Ê

FITNESS

• Women's challenge: Hawai'i's female fitness athletes will compete for more than $10,000 in cash and prizes at the first Hawaiian Hurricane's Fitness Challenge, next Saturday at the Kapi'olani Bandstand.

The challenge consists of an obstacle course timed event and a physique/swimwear contest. First place is worth $3,000.

Men will compete in a "winner- take-all" obstacle course race.

A fitness expo, including live entertainment and vendor and food booths, also will be held.

The event, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., is open to the public. Proceeds will benefit breast cancer research.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

• Dobelle to speak: University of Hawai'i President Evan Dobelle and UH assistant football coaches Rich Miano (defensive backs) and Ron Lee (receivers), will be the guest speakers at the Quarterback Club on Monday at the Pagoda Hotel.

UH Wahine volleyball player Kim Willoughby will be honored as the sportsperson of the month for August.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. with the program to follow. The public is invited.
