University of Hawai'i pays tribute to faculty, staff

The following faculty and staff members at the University of Hawai'i have received awards:

• Hung Wo and Elizabeth Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community — Paul Jacoby, instructor/Computer Electronics and Networking Technologies, Honolulu Community College; Karl Kim, interim vice chancellor/academic affairs and professor of urban and regional planning, UH-Manoa; Noreen Mokuau, professor of social work, UH- Manoa; Noelie Rodriguez, assistant professor/social sciences and humanities, Hawai'i Community College.

• Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching — Paul Chandler, associate professor of Spanish, College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature; Kathryn Klingebiel, associate professor/French, College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature; Rebecca Knuth, assistant professor, Library and Information Science Program, College of Natural Sciences; Matthew McGranaghan, associate professor, department of geography, College of Social Sciences; Steven Robinow, associate professor, department of zoology, College of Natural Sciences; Krisnawati Suryanata, assistant professor, department of zoology, College of Natural Sciences.

• University of Hawai'i Community Colleges Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Service — Jayne Maruya, administrative officer, Kapi'olani Community College.

• Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education — Mark Yalbuw, 2000 graduate/carpentry, Hawai'i Community College.

• UH-Hilo Chancellor's Award for Teaching Excellence by an Instructor or Lecturer — Sue L. Aki, affiliate professor, anthropology and women's studies.

• Employment Training Center's outstanding employee of the year — David Murakami, student services counselor.

• The International Biographical Centre of Cambridge, England, has announced that Dr. Jong Wang, DDG, of Honolulu has been invested as a laureate of the IBC Lifetime Achievement Award for a lifetime achievement in Chinese studies and education. Investiture as a laureate is conferred only after a thorough evaluation of each candidate's qualifications by members of the IBC Research and Advisory Board. The award is made to selected noteworthy individuals across the globe in recognition of their lifetime accomplishments.

• Three students from the University of Hawai'i at Hilo have been selected for the 2001-2002 University of Ryukyus Short-term Student Exchange Program in Okinawa.

Kim Hyunjeong, a senior majoring in linguistics, Benjamin Graham, a junior pursuing a degree in business administration, and Aaron Chitwood, a sophomore majoring in Japanese studies, are the first students from UH-Hilo chosen to take part in the program.

Their studies will include Japanese language and culture, international relations, law and business in contemporary Japan and Okinawan culture.
