Chaminade makes it two in a row over BYUH

After ending a 16-year drought to Brigham Young-Hawai'i, Chaminade's women's volleyball team didn't wait long for its next victory.

The Silverswords defeated the Seasiders last night, 19-30, 30-27, 30-22, 30-28, for their second victory in two nights over BYUH at McCabe Gym.

Chaminade improved to 5-5 overall and 2-0 in the Pacific West Conference. BYUH is 5-4 and 1-3.

• HPU wins 38th in row: Roberta Robert had a match-high 17 kills, and Andrea Wean added 16 kills and hit .424 as top-ranked Hawai'i Pacific defeated Montana State-Billings, 30-20, 30-25, 30-21, last night at Billings, Mont.

The Sea Warriors, ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II, won their 38th straight match.

Robert also had 13 digs for her sixth double-double (kills-digs) this season.

HPU improved to 10-0 overall and 4-0 in the PacWest. Montana State-Billings dropped to 8-5 and 1-3.

• Hilo loses, again: Kim Tano and Dana Dietrich had 11 kills apiece as Western New Mexico defeated Hawai'i-Hilo, 30-27, 31-29, 27-30, 30-28, in a Pacific West Conference volleyball match last night at Silver City, N.M.

Elaina Salvador had 13 kills and Tiffany Ollison had 19 digs to lead the Vulcans.

Western New Mexico improved to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the PacWest. UHH dropped to 5-7 and 0-4.


SOCCER

• Wahine lose: Cal State Northridge scored two second-half goals to defeat the University of Hawai'i, 3-2, in Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Invitational at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium last night.

Arlene Devitt scored off an assist from Jen Starsiak, and Tia Medeiros scored off assists from Tiffany Makue and Joelle Sugai to give the Wahine a 2-1 halftime lead.

UH outshot Northridge 18-6.

Hawai'i is 3-2, Northridge 5-0-1. The two teams play again tomorrow at Waipi'o.


CROSS COUNTRY

• Smith, Madsen win: University of Hawai'i's Cheryl Smith and Hawai'i Pacific University's Christian Madsen won the women's and men's races, respectively, at the University of Hawai'i Invitational cross country meet at Kane'ohe Klipper Golf Course yesterday.

UH won the women's title with a meet-low 35 points, followed by HPU with 55 and Brigham Young-Hawaii with 76.

Hawai'i Pacific took the men's title with 33 points, followed by UH-Hilo and BYUH with 86 each.

Smith, a senior from Kirkwood, N.Y., won her third Invitational in 17 minutes, 58.2 seconds over the 5-kilometer course. HPU's Nina Christensen was second in 18:05.7. Lisa Blomme, also of HPU, was third in 18:38.7.

Madsen, a junior from Birkcrod, Denmark, won in 15:15.9 over a 5-kilometer course. Abdeslam Naji of HPU was second in 16:37.8. Kyle Briggs of Brigham Young-Hawai'i was third in 16:58.6.


GOLF

• Warriors last: The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished last in the 20-team William H. Tucker Invitational at Albuquerque, N.M., yesterday.

New Mexico won the tournament for the first time in nine years with a three-round 859 total. Pepperdine was second at 870. Hawai'i shot 923.

Manuel Merizalde of Brigham Young was the medalist at 7-under-par 209, after a final round of 6-under 66.

Wil Collins and Michael Letzig of New Mexico finished tied for second at 212.

Matthew Kodama was UH's highest finisher at 75-73-74-222 (tied for 29th).
