Cendant still buying stock

Cendant Corp., franchiser of the Avis rental car chain and Days Inn hotels, extended until Oct. 5 its tender offer for shares of Honolulu-based Cheap Tickets Inc., which it announced Aug. 13 it would buy for about $280 million.

The original offer was scheduled to expire last Friday, but Cendant had bought only 86 percent of the shares by midnight Friday.

Cyanotech wins nature award

Cyanotech Corp., the Big Island producer of microalgae products, said it had received the Hawaii Audubon Society's Corporate Conservation Award for its contribution to native bird conservation.

Society president Wendy Johnson praised Cyanotech for increasing nesting opportunities for the endangered Hawaiian stilt, or ae'o, by creating a waterbird habitat at its facility.

Kona Coast Hawaiian stilts historically have averaged 24 birds. Their numbers reached 69 in 1996 and 128 in 1997 with the addition of 60 acres of shallow open water ponds at Cyanotech and a local wastewater treatment plant.
