Empty tour bus runs over woman twice

KAIMU, Hawai'i — A 54-year-old North Carolina woman was in critical condition at the Queen's Medical Center yesterday after being run over twice by an empty tour bus on the Big Island.

Police said the Polynesian Adventures Tours bus was parked at Verna's Drive Inn with its engine off and the hand brake engaged when it began to roll downhill at about 2:50 p.m. Monday.

The bus struck and ran over Sandy Tschopp of Durham, N.C. The bus then ran up an embankment and rolled back, running over her a second time.


Man arrested in bank robbery

A 39-year-old man was arrested yesterday in connection with the robbery of the Kaimuki branch of Territorial Savings on Monday.

The arrest was made after CrimeStoppers in Honolulu and on Maui received tips. Police arrested the man about 1:45 p.m. at the corner of Punahou and Dole streets.


Big Island highway closed by brush fire

WAIMEA, Hawai'i — The Kohala Mountain Highway in North Hawai'i was closed most of yesterday because of a brush fire about seven miles north of Waimea.

The fire developed around 10:45 a.m. and was continuing at nightfall, according to police Capt. Robert Kaaua.
