Helicopter makes emergency landing

Advertiser Staff

A helicopter with five people on board made an emergency landing in a pasture in Kea'au on the Big Island this afternoon.

Puna police said the pilot of the helicopter heard a pop and brought the helicopter down in a field near the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut farm at about 2:25. All five people on the helicopter were able to get out and only one minor injury was reported.

Shortly after the landing, the helicopter burst into flames and was destroyed, police said. The helicopter belonged to a tour company, and police were trying to determine the name of the firm late this afternoon.

Police said two women and two men were passengers in the helicopter. The pilot of the helicopter was a woman, whose name was not immediately available.
