The Buzz

Purple and blue

"Purple Verses ... Blue Notes," a recital by soprano Vicki Gorman, James Moffitt on clarinet, Nancy Masaki on cello and Grant Mack on piano, gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Hawai'i Public Radio's Atherton Performing Arts Studio. "Purple Verses" refers to the 1997 work by University of Hawai'i composer Takeo Kudo; the blues will come from Jack Gottlieb's 1980 piece, "Downtown Blues for Uptown Halls." Other pieces by Franz Schubert, Dominick Argento, Wilfred Josephs and Alan Hovhaness will be performed. Tickets are $15 general, $12.50 for HPR members, $10 students. 955-8821.

Celebrate

The Aloha Festivals ho'olaule'a in Waikiki and downtown have been rescheduled for Oct. 5 and 12, but the Windward ho'olaule'a plays on as scheduled, 4-11 p.m. Saturday at Mehana and Kawa streets in Kane'ohe. Among the offerings will be four stages of entertainment, 20 food booths, 30 arts and crafts booths and appearances by the Aloha Festivals royal court. Among the performers will be Teresa Bright, Willie K, Sean Na'auao, Maunalua, Vaihi, Col÷n and Chant. Admission is free. 239-9003, 845-4111.

A little naughty

For a change of pace, there's the very popular musician/kumu hula/chanter Keali'i Reichel, offering a light-hearted evening of hakukole (chants of ridicule), 6-8 p.m. today at Halau o Haumea Auditorium, University of Hawai'i's Center for Hawaiian Studies. Love in the afternoon

Chanter/vocalist/poet Charlottemarie (formerly known as Lila Kane), offers the sounds of love in an afternoon concert titled "Voice of the Beloved," 4 p.m. Sunday at the Honolulu Academy of Arts theater. Charlottemarie, whose latest compact disc is titled "Ancestral Voices," will sing in languages including Sanskrit, Farsi, Spanish, Tibetan and Latin. Tickets are $12. 532-8700.

All jazzed up

Jazzy songbird Azure McCall celebrates the release of her new compact disc, "Harlem Nocturne," with a dinner concert that benefits the American Cancer Society Hawaii Pacific Inc., Worknet (an employment-training firm) and the American Red Cross. It begins at 7 p.m. today at the Mauna Kea ballroom of the Hawaii Prince Hotel in Waikiki. McCall, who'll be backed by pianist Tennyson Stevens and a quartet of musicians, will be joined by special guests Henry Kapono, Roland Cazimero, Fiji, Fascinatin' Rhythm, Shari Lynn and DisGuyz. Tickets are $35 for the show only (beginning at 8:30 p.m.) and a CD; $65, including dinner, the show and CD; and $125 (half tax deductible), which includes dinner, the show, special seating and an autographed CD. 841-6665, 944-3325.
