Man sought in Pearl City robbery of girl

Police are looking for a man who robbed a 14-year-old girl near the Pearl City High School cafeteria Aug. 31.

Police said the girl was going to a football game when the man approached her at about 7:50. He grabbed her wrist and stole her purse, police said.

The man then got into a waiting vehicle and fled. Police said he is believed to frequent basketball courts in Pearl City.

He is described as in his early 20s, 6 feet, 220 pounds, with a dark complexion and a black afro-style haircut. Police said the man had a "distinct" beer belly and his head seemed small in relation to his body.

Anyone with information on this case is asked to phone CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.

Moped rider critically hurt

A 22-year-old man was critically injured when his moped struck a Nissan Pathfinder in Kapahulu yesterday.

Police said the moped, heading north on Kapahulu Avenue, was attempting to pass other cars to beat a yellow light when it collided with the vehicle at 5:05 p.m.

Officers said the 32-year-old driver of the Pathfinder was making a left turn from Kapahulu onto Campbell Avenue when the accident occurred.

The moped rider suffered head injuries and was in critical condition last night at the Queen's Medical Center. The woman driving the Pathfinder was not injured.

Correction: A previous version of this story incorrectly said the Pathfinder hit the moped.

The entry gates to Fort Shafter and surrounding streets were closed for 90 minutes yesterday after a suspicious white bag was found hanging on a fence near Pyle Gate on Fort Shafter Flats.

Army security personnel found the bag near the reserve training area at about 6:25 a.m., said Capt. Stacy Bathrick, spokeswoman for the 25th Infantry Division (Light) and U.S. Army, Hawai'i.

The bag contained telephone wire, Bathrick said.

Arsonist sought in Kalihi business fire

The fire was set between 6 p.m. Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday at Oahu Plumbing & Sheet Metal Ltd. on 938 Kohou St., police said. The debris found at the scene appeared to be the remains of a Molotov cocktail that had been thrown inside the shop. The fire burned itself out and caused minor damage.

Waipi'o fire closes highway

A brush fire in Waipi'o forced the closure of a stretch of Kamehameha Highway and knocked out electricity yesterday afternoon, but caused no property damage.

Capt. Richard Soo, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department, said the fire, which appeared to have been deliberately set, was the third blaze in the area within two days.

The fire near 94-535 Kamehameha Highway was reported at 3:45 p.m. just off Uke'e Street. Soo said the fire did come to within 20 feet of several businesses.

Police closed a stretch of Kamehameha Highway between Ka Uka Boulevard and Lanikuhana Avenue.

The blaze was brought under control at about 4:30 and the highway was reopened a half-hour later.

Fire officials said several electric lines were threatened by the flames and they asked Hawaiian Electric Co. to shut off power temporarily.
