Residents, groups donate more than $1.1 million

In the two weeks since the terrorist attacks on the East Coast, Hawai'i residents and various organizations have donated $320,000 to the September 11th Fund, which was created to aid the victims and their families.
The collections include money gathered from more than 2,500 individuals as well as local banks, the Aloha United Way, the HMSA Foundation, Hawai'i Community Foundation and Hawaiian Electric Co.
Contributions may be made to the Hawai'i State Chapter at 4155 Diamond Head Road, Honolulu HI 96816 or by calling 734-2101. Contributions can also be made online at www.redcross.org
Contributions may still be made at local banks, at Foodland, Sack N Save and Star supermarkets, and by mail to: The September 11th Fund, c/o Hawai'i Community Foundation, Pioneer Plaza, 900 Fort Street Mall, Suite 1300, Honolulu, HI 96813 and online at www.hcf-hawaii.org.
The American Red Cross yesterday reported that donations statewide soared to $836,000, up from $721,000 in just two days. The organization has begun a $100 million gift program to provide financial assistance to families of people lost in the attacks.
That assistance is expected to include mortgage and rent payments, funeral expenses, as well as food, transportation and clothing to help those dealing with the sudden loss.
