Mid-Pacific catcher commits to Hawai'i

New coach Mike Trapasso has wasted little time in snagging recruits for the University of Hawai'i's 2003 season.

Mid-Pacific Institute senior catcher Matt Inouye said he has verbally committed to play for the Rainbows. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter batted .404 with four home runs last season for the Owls. He was an Interscholastic League of Honolulu second-team all-star selection last year.

"Ever since I was little, UH always was my favorite," Inouye said. "It's a real good opportunity for me."

The earliest Inouye may sign a binding letter of intent is Nov. 14, the start of the week-long early signing period. Also, NCAA rules prohibit coaches from commenting until a player signs.

During the summer, Inouye played in American Legion and in a tournament in Reno, Nev., where UH assistant Chad Konishi was scouting, Inouye said. But it was at a Major League Baseball-sponsored combine at Rainbow Stadium in June where Trapasso noticed him, Inouye added.

Inouye said Hawai'i Pacific University also showed interest.

Inouye gave up football this season to concentrate on baseball. He was a defensive back and quarterback for Pac-Five last season.

The commitment fills a need in two years, when junior catchers Brian Bock and Grady Symonds, a junior college transfer, will be done with their eligibility. They also could be lost after this season if they are drafted and sign.

The Rainbows open fall training Monday. The season starts Jan. 30 against perennial power Florida State. The Rainbows' annual alumni game is Jan. 26.
