Pearl City fire hits apartment

Fire damaged an apartment on the 35th floor of the Century Park Plaza in Pearl City last night.

The fire was reported at 9:41 p.m. in a studio apartment in Tower B of the twin-tower complex at 1060 Kamehameha Highway. When firefighters arrived, a sprinkler had already been activated and kept the fire from spreading, said Capt. Richard Soo, spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.

The fire was under control at 9:49 and extinguished at 10:35, Soo said. The amount of damage had not been determined last night.

A tenant said he had gone down to empty some trash and returned to find a fire in his living room. A fire investigator was looking into the cause of the blaze last night.

More than 3,000 men served with the unit, which is considered the "most decorated" for its size and length of time in combat.

Man held in assault on motorist

Police arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with an assault on another man Thursday night in Nanakuli.

Police said a 23-year-old man was fixing his car near the intersection of Piliokahi Avenue and Pohakupalena Street when another man stopped to help him. The motorist declined the offer, but the man, who appeared to be intoxicated, insisted, police said. An argument erupted and the would-be samaritan took the motorist's tire iron and hit him, police said.

The man was arrested on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and second-degree assault.

State, teachers pick mediator

The state and teachers union have agreed to appoint Honolulu attorney Colbert Matsumoto as mediator in their contract dispute.

The two sides will begin the closed-door mediation on Friday.

The Hawai'i Labor Relations Board ordered the parties into mediation in an attempt to resolve their dispute over a professional bonus and whether it was intended to be paid for one or two years. If mediation is unsuccessful, the board is scheduled to begin hearing the complaints filed in the matter on Oct. 22.

Matsumoto has previously served as the court-appointed master in the Bishop Estate case.
