Kahuku rolls over Kailua, 48-7

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

KAILUA — It appears the Kahuku High School football team may have to look outside the O'ahu Interscholastic Association for its next big challenge.

Kahuku's Ola Kubota (44) and Kailua's Chaz Tabias go after a ball intended for Tabias in the first quarter.

That's because for the second straight week the Red Raiders (6-0) looked out of this world.

Kahuku dominated previously unbeaten Kailua, 48-7, last night before an overflow crowd of about 3,500 at the Surfriders' field.

The victory improved the Red Raiders to 5-0 in the OIA's Red Conference, after they methodically disposed of their third contender in a row.

Kahuku beat Mililani, 34-19, two weeks ago and Castle, 57-10, last week.

The Red Raiders have a bye next week, then play Leilehua.

Kailua (4-1, 3-1) was supposed to be a stiff test, but Kahuku passed it without much of a problem.

Again, the Red Raiders hurt themselves more than their opponents did, being penalized 14 times for 123 yards. Against Castle, Kahuku had 17 flags for 135 yards.

"We're still a little messy here and there," Red Raiders coach Siuaki Livai said. "But when we execute the way we're suppposed to, it will be very hard for us to lose."

Kahuku outgained Kailua 251 yards to 76 in the first half, taking a 34-7 lead into intermission.

The Red Raiders did it mostly through the air, with quarterback Inoke Funaki completing 7 of 12 passes for 221 yards and two touchdowns in the first two quarters. He finished 9 of 18 for 250 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. Funaki also rushed eight times for 49 yards and three touchdowns.

Kahuku's defense also turned in an outstanding performance, shutting down one of the conference's top three quarterbacks for the second straight week.

The Surfriders' Taleki Mailau was hounded by the Red Raiders' front four all night. He finished the first half with just one completion in 10 attempts for 10 yards.

He was intercepted three times, including a pick by George Perry, which was returned 53 yards for a touchdown. That helped give Kahuku a 34-7 lead with 5:34 remaining in the half.

According to Livai, it was all in the plan.

"I have the best defensive coordinators (Keala "Louis" Santiago and Byron Beatty)," Livai said. "People can't imagine the amount of time they spend watching film. They go home after the game and watch film for four or five hours then watch for about five hours more on Saturday. We know exactly what we did wrong and we can recognize our mistakes."
