Wahine soccer team falls to No. 24 Gaels, 4-1

Saint Mary's scored two goals in each half to defeat the University of Hawai'i, 4-1, last night in a women's soccer match at Moraga, Calif.

The 24th-ranked Gaels improved to 7-0-1. The Wahine, playing the first of a three-game road trip, fell to 3-3-0.

Sarah Rae Takekawa (Kailua High School) put Saint Mary's ahead 1-0 at 14:03 with a header off a pass from Katie Frattone, but the Wahine tied it 10 minutes later when Arlene Devitt buried a 15-yarder.

Jan Belzer's 30-yarder just before halftime put the Gaels ahead for good, 2-1.

Shauna Rech scored at 51:01 off another Frattone pass and Katie Sticinski converted a penalty kick with a minute left to play.


GOLF

Turtle Bay qualifying: Fifty Hawai'i and Mainland golf professionals and amateurs will compete in the Turtle Bay Championship qualifying round Monday at the Turtle Bay Arnold Palmer Tournament course.

They will be playing for four spots in the $1.5 million inaugural Turtle Bay Championship Tournament, Oct. 1-7.

Among the local pros entered in the qualifying are Rodney Acia, Chuck Davis, Carl Matthews, Larry Stubblefield, Thomas Ukauka, Frank Sanchez, Dean Prince and Dan Nishimoto.
