High surf warning canceled, advisory posted

Advertiser Staff

The National Weather Service canceled a high surf warning today but posted a high surf advisory for north and northwest shores at noon today,

O'ahu lifeguards continued to closely watch what were described as hazardous conditions.

Waves with faces of up to 40 feet had been predicted last week. Instead, waves that were less than half size rolled ashore today, said Lt. John Hoogsteden, one of the city's North Shore lifeguards.

"Our strategy in guarding the beaches today is using preventative actions," he said. "Most areas are going to be restricted. There will be no recreational swimming."

Experienced surfers, however, would be allowed to tackle the 12- to 16-foot waves, he said.

"There is a lot of energy moving around and those are dangerous, hazardous conditions," he said.

Surf heights were expected to diminish through tomorrow, Hoogsteden said.
