60 SECONDS ON BUSINESS
Award program can encourage workers
By Dr. Drake Beil

How do you get motivated on the job? As you think about that, consider the poor sales person who gets rejected repeatedly, and still has to find some spark of desire to try one more time. And one more time. And yet one more time.
Aside from standard toolbox that features the overused "pat on the back/kick in the butt" approach, what other innovations are there to provide needed recognition to recharge those sales and service batteries?
One proven motivational tool is participation in the Distinguished Sales and Marketing Awards sponsored by the Sales and Marketing Executives of Honolulu.
The awards program showcases companies and individuals and recognition includes free lunches, individual and team trophies and special gifts for winners. There's a commendation from the governor, complimentary seminars on sales skills or professional sales techniques, a photo session, press releases and articles about the good things you are doing.
The 24th annual awards will be held May 9 at the Hawaii Prince Hotel and emceed by Perry & Price. Participants have included Anheuser-Busch Sales of Hawaii, Clear Channel Communications Inc., First Hawaiian Bank, Hagadone Printing Co., The Honolulu Advertiser, The Gas Co., This Week Magazines, Verizon and VoiceStream.
If you want to join others who use this program to recognize and reward hard-working sales people, check out the organization's Web site at SMEhonolulu.com, or call SME offices for more info at (808) 537-1158.
