  • Mayor Jeremy Harris and Paul Casey, chief executive of Hawaiian Airlines, will be among government officials, travel industry and education leaders, and scholars discussing sustainable travel and tourism — and the challenges ahead — at an international "think tank" sponsored by the University of Hawai'i School of Travel Industry Management. "PROMOTING BEST PRACTICES IN SUSTAINABLE TRAVEL AND TOURISM" is scheduled April 10-13 at the East-West Center's Hawai'i Imin International Conference Center.

    Casey will speak April 10; Harris, April 11. Other speakers will include chief state economist Pearl Imada-Iboshi; Peter Apo of the Native Hawaiian Hospitality Association; and Pauline Sheldon, interim UH TIM dean.

    Co-sponsors of the event include the Pacific Asia Travel Association and the Hawai'i Tourism Authority.

  • Another event of the TIM "think tank" will be the Ambassador L.W. "Bill" Lane Jr. Lecture on Sustainable Tourism, 4 to 5:30 p.m. April 9 in the UH School of Architecture Auditorium on the Manoa campus.

    The keynote speaker will be Pamela Wight, chief executive officer of the Canadian tour and ecotourism consultancy Pam Wight & Associates. An international panel of experts in sustainable tourism practices will participate.

  • W. DAVID P.
