Wave throws five hikers to rocks

Firefighters and an ambulance crew were called to the Makapu'u lighthouse trail yesterday after five hikers were injured at the tide pools below.

Firefighters said the man and four women had hiked down to the pools and were standing on the rocks when they were struck by a rogue wave that knocked them down, causing minor scratches and bruises across their bodies. One woman injured her wrist and shoulder.

All five were able to walk out and seek treatment at local clinics.

Broken pipe closes Ward

A 6-inch water main broke early yesterday on Ward Avenue, leaving occupants of an apartment building temporarily without water.

The break, reported at 3:17 a.m. at 1440 Ward Ave., between Green and Spencer streets, closed the mauka-bound lane.

Crews restored water at 11:30 a.m. and finished repaving shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Firefighter union names official

Guy Tajiri has been named business manager of the Hawai'i Fire Fighters Association (Local 1463, IAFF).

Union President Bobby Lee said Tajiri's experience in labor relations and knowledge of public-sector employee issues will help the union as it enters negotiations with the state and counties.

Tajiri has been on staff at the Hawai'i Government Employees Association for 23 years, handling advisory, grievance, arbitration and other duties, the union said.

He is a graduate of the University of Hawai'i and Harvard Trade Union Program and first vice president of the National Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance.

Schools invited to health event

Kuakini Health System is inviting interested schools to its open house for students May 9 and 10.

Last year, about 1,300 students from preschool to high school attended the free event to learn about healthcare, careers and ways to stay healthy.

Departments of emergency services, surgery, imaging services and infection control will have exhibits. Activities will include testing touch, learning the correct way to wash hands, maneuvering a wheelchair and using equipment to improve hand-eye coordination.

Schools must call to register their classes, 547-9168.
