The Hawai'i State Office of Mothers Against Drunk Driving has received a charitable grant for $12,000 from the McInerny Foundation to support its Public Awareness Outreach Program. The program warns about the dangers of impaired driving and provides safe, viable alternatives.

River of Life Mission has received a $100,000 grant from the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation Inc. in support of its food service and food box distribution programs.

The mission, at the corner of Maunakea and North Pauahi streets, serves about 10,000 hot meals a month. That reflects an increase of 30 percent over the same time last year.

In addition, a food-box program initiated two years ago has grown, with 1,000 boxes distributed monthly. Supplies in the boxes are geared to household sizes. Those in need may request assistance at the downtown Honolulu headquarters.

Macy's recently donated $18,000 to The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i. The money was raised through the sale of Curious George plush toys that the retailer sold statewide as a part of its grand opening celebration. Five percent from each sale of the toys was donated.

The Nature Conservancy of Hawai'i was one of three charitable organizations to benefit from the Macy's Ala Moana Special Night Opening Party. The fund-raiser generated a combined $12,550. Also benefiting were Hawai'i Children's Development Center and Hawai'i Foodbank.

Goodwill has been awarded $25,000 by the Sophie Russell Testamentary Trust toward its Emergency Job Training and Placement Assistance program set up to help workers who have been displaced because of the economic downturn.

Short-term skills training will be provided for people previously employed in the tourism industry needing assistance and training to move into careers experiencing worker shortages. Training programs are being set up in the areas of A+ certification, certified nursing assistant and human service worker.

The Hawai'i Medical Service Association has given The American Cancer Society a $5,000 gift for its Great American Smokeout, its annual event aimed at informing people about the dangers of smoking.
