Porter wins WAC softball honor

The University of Hawai'i's Stacey Porter was named Western Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week for the second time this season after batting .556 with eight RBIs in six games last week.

Porter, a sophomore from Tarnwortf, New South Wales, Australia, helped UH go 5-1 last week.

Her three-run homer against San Jose State Friday made her the school single-season record holder with 10. Cheyenne Thompson (1994) and Dana Degen (2000) each had nine.

The Rainbow Wahine are 26-16 overall and lead the WAC with a 7-1 record.

Hawai'i will next play road games against Louisiana Tech April 12-13.

Louisiana Tech's Sabra Warner was named WAC Pitcher of the Week.

MORE SOFTBALL

Hilo sweeps: Kristine Kahoalii picked up her eighth shutout win of the season as Hilo beat Florida Southern, 1-0, in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Lakeland, Fla.

The Vulcans won the second game, 6-2.

In the opener, Hilo scored in the third inning when Claressa Asuncion doubled in Michelle LaRose.

Kahoalii (11-4) walked two and struck out four.

In the second game, Leinani Hashida and Molly Liston each drove in two runs for the Vulcans.

Tara Martinez (9-4) picked up the win after giving up nine hits and two runs over 6¡ innings. Taysha Anderson pitched the final two-thirds of an inning.

Hilo improved to 28-11, and Florida Southern dropped to 14-22.

BASEBALL

Radford beats Nanakuli: Radford benefitted from seven Nanakuli errors in a 7-1 O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division victory yesterday.

The host Golden Hawks committed four errors in a five-run sixth inning.

The game was a makeup for Saturday's rainout.

KARATE

Au wins two golds: Lisa Au of the International Karate Federation won two gold medals at the All-Japan Goodwill Junior Karate-do Tournament Sunday in Tokyo.

Au won the kata (form) and kumite (sparring) categories in the high school division.

IKF members Masakazu Kurita (intermediate) and Emi Kurita (elementary) also won gold medals in kumite. Emi Kurita also took third in kata.

Elmer Constantino of Kick Start Karate placed third in kata and kumite in the high school division.

Mayrie Aquino of Kick Start Karate placed third in high school kumite.

Pasha Pauvavo of IKF placed second in elementary kumite.
