Waialua accident kills woman

A 61-year-old Waialua woman died yesterday morning when her car was broadsided by a pickup truck, police said.

The woman's Saturn sedan was struck at about 6:10 a.m. as she attempted a left turn from Naluahi Street onto Farrington Highway in Waialua, police said. She died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, a 31-year-old Mililani man, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition. Police said the truck was speeding.


DUI arrests down on Big Island

Big Island police reported a slight decrease in motorists arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol this year compared with the same period last year.

As of Monday, there had been 201 DUI arrests this year, a 2 percent decrease from the 205 arrested during the same period last year, police said.

During the week of March 25-31, Big Island police arrested 10 motorists for alleged drunk driving. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic accident.

There have been 531 major accidents so far this year, compared to 571 during the same period last year, a decrease of 7 percent.

There have been 11 traffic fatalities on the Big Island so far this year, compared to four during the same period last year. The DUI fatality count so far this year is three, compared to one during the same period last year.


Teacher on trial in sex-assault case

The trial of a Mililani Middle School teacher accused of sexually assaulting two seventh-grade girls last year began in Circuit Court yesterday with the prosecution contending that Allan Sagayaga improperly touched the two girls.

Sagayaga was charged with two counts of third-degree sexual assault in the case. One of the girls reported an alleged incident to authorities in February 2001, the same day she said it took place, while the second girl came forward the following month after seeing media reports about the first girl's complaint.

Sagayaga has pleaded not guilty to the charges and maintains the allegations are groundless.

His trial continues today before Circuit Judge Michael Town.


Woman sought in bank robbery

Police were searching for a 44-year-old woman wanted for questioning in a robbery of the main branch of Bank of Hawaii on March 11.

Police want to talk to Monalin Rogers about the bank robbery at 111 S. King Street. Police said a woman entered the bank at 12:40 p.m., stood in line, approached the teller and lifted her shirt to display a handgun. The woman fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Police said Rogers has violated terms of her probation for prior drug cases and frequents the downtown and Chinatown areas. She is 5 feet, 6 inches tall, 160 pounds and has a medium build. She has black wavy hair and a tan complexion.

Tourist mugged at bowling alley

Police are searching for an armed robber who mugged a 44-year-old Japanese tourist Monday night in a bathroom in the University Bowl-O-Drome in Mo'ili'ili.

The mugger brandished a knife with an eight-inch blade and confronted the tourist in the bathroom at about 10:15 p.m., police said. The robber stole the tourist's wallet, which had $300 inside, police said.

The mugger was described as 5 feet 7 and 180 pounds. The tourist was not injured. After the robbery, the mugger fled from the bowling alley at 820 Isenberg St.
