Shriners helping shark victim

Hokuanu Aki met yesterday with Shriners Hospital orthopedic surgeons and a prosthetist who will provide him with a temporary prosthesis.

Aki, the 17-year-old from Kaua'i who lost his left leg after he was attacked by a shark while bodyboarding, will undergo intensive physical therapy to help him stand and walk with the artificial leg, Shriners Hospital said. He will receive a permanent prosthesis in one or two months.

The teen is expected to return home to Kaua'i by the end of this week, where he has said he is looking forward to the school prom and other senior year plans.
