Islanders earn arenafootball2 weekly honors

Hawaiian Islanders quarterback Darnell Arceneaux was named arenafootball2 Offensive Player of the Week, and Sae Paogofie was named Defensive Player of the Week.

Arceneaux threw three touchdown passes and ran for three more as the Islanders beat the Fresno Frenzy, 50-47, Saturday. He scored the go-ahead touchdown on a sneak with seven seconds remaining.

Paogofie recorded five tackles and blocked a kick.

Paogofie's brother, Chris Paogofie, received the Built Ford Tough Recognition Award after making four tackles, recovering a fumble and amassing 28 return yards.


SURFING

• Garcia advances: Former world surfing champion Sunny Garcia of Wai'anae advanced to the fourth round of the Rip Curl Pro in 3- to 5-foot waves at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia, yesterday.

Garcia, the 2000 world champ, defeated Brazil's Fabio Gouveia, 21.75-17.05, in yesterday's third round. Garcia's total included high-scoring rides of 8.25 and 7.75.

Two other Hawai'i surfers, Kalani Robb and Andy Irons, have yet to complete their third-round heats. Robb is scheduled to face Brazil's Guilherme Herdy; Irons is scheduled to meet Russell Winter of Great Britain.

The contest is the second stop on the World Championship Tour.


SOFTBALL

• BYUH loses two: The Brigham Young-Hawai'i softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader, 8-0 and 9-0, to Western New Mexico University yesterday in Silver City, N.M.

The Seasiders were held to no hits in the first game and two in the second. Both games were shortened to five innings by the eight-run rule.

BYUH dropped to 9-22 overall and 2-12 in the Pacific West Conference. Western New Mexico is 25-7-1 and 16-2. The teams play another doubleheader today.

Elsewhere yesterday, the Hawai'i Pacific at Montana State-Billings doubleheader was canceled because of overnight temperatures in the single digits. It was the second straight day that a doubleheader was canceled. The four games will not be rescheduled.


GYMNASTICS

• Boys at Blaisdell: The USA Region I Boys Gymnastic Championships will be held today through Saturday at the Blaisdell Arena.

More than 900 gymnasts from Arizona, California, Nevada and Hawai'i, ranging in age from 7 to 18, will be competing.

The event runs from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
