Hilo student wins State Science Fair honors

A freshman from St. Joseph School in Hilo emerged as the winner at this week's Hawai'i State Science and Engineering Fair.
For her computer science project entitled "Artificial Neural Networks: Mechanisms of Pattern Recognition and Learning," Kimberly E. Reinhold heads for the International Science and Engineering Fair in Louisville, Ky., in May as Hawai'i's top representative.
She was among nearly two dozen winners announced yesterday from among 480 students competing at the science fair. The winners are:
Senior research: First place, Kimberly E. Reinhold, St. Joseph School; second, Yu-Tzu Liu, St. Andrew's Priory; third, Kiani A.J. Arkus, Kamehameha Schools. Honorable mention: Matthew D.A. Jachowski, Maui High School; and Liang Wang, Waiakea High School; and the team of Luke Evslin, Grant Teichman and Kalani Lopez, Kaua'i High School.
Junior research: First place, Mari Takemoto-Chock, Waiakea Intermediate; second, the team of Dayna Chikamoto and Kyla M. Teramoto, Iolani School; third, Kapena Landgraf, Hilo Intermediate School. Honorable mention: the team of Jonathan M. Kim and Robert Wurtz, Mililani Middle School; Kevin M. Sagawa, Waiakea Intermediate; Braxton D. Sato, Benjamin Parker Elementary.
Junior display: First place, Lauren E.R. McNally, Iolani; second, Taylor Michael Wong, Iolani; third, Ramen I.K. Tagupa-Kukahiwa, St. Ann's School. Honorable mention: Cheyanna Marsh, St. Joseph School; Ren K. Ishii, Kawananakoa Middle School; Travis K. Morimoto, Iolani School.
Among other winners going on to the international fair in May will be:
Hawai'i State Science and Engineering Fair: Kimberly Reinhold, St. Joseph School; and Liang Wang, Waiakea High.
Maui District Science Fair winner: Matthew Jackowski, Maui High.
Kaua'i District Science Fair winners: Ricky Rodrick, Kapa'a High; Paula-Ann Carvalho, Kapa'a High; and the team of Jeremy Albano, Carrie Esaki and Sam Moats-Messing, Kapa'a High.
Leeward O'ahu District Science Fair winners: Marlon Gomez, Campbell High; Janette Gerolaga, Campbell High; and the team of Ryan Messina and Maisel Caliva, Waipahu High.
Windward District Science Fair winner: Chad Nishizuka, Kailua High.
Hawai'i Association of Independent Schools: Kiani Arkus, Kamehameha Schools; Yu-Tzu (Debbie) Liu, St. Andrew's Priory; and the team of Teresa Martinez and Kanana Dang, Kamehameha Schools.
