The victory kept Kailua atop the O'ahu Interscholastic Association baseball standings with a 3-0 record, while Moanalua fell to 2-1.
The slugfest was a rematch of last year's OIA championship game won by Kailua, 9-3. Ho's single, which came with the bases loaded, capped a four-run rally in the final inning, after the Menehune scored twice in the top half to take a 14-11 lead.
"I was just thinking, 'Stay small,' because all we needed was a single," Ho said.
The Surfriders' rally began after one out, and consisted of a hit batter, single, walk, RBI single, another hit batter, another RBI single and Ho's blooper. Ho, a junior, was part of last year's Kailua's team that rallied from an 8-2 deficit in the sixth inning to defeat Mid-Pacific, 9-8, in the state championship game.
"We're always thinking we can win," Ho said.
The teams traded shots from the beginning, with Moanalua taking a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The Surfriders scored four in the second to go up, 4-3, but the Menehune retook the lead at 5-4 in the third. In the bottom half of that inning, Kailua scored three runs to go ahead 7-5. Moanalua answered with three runs in the fourth to go up 8-7, and stretched the lead to 12-7 with four runs in the sixth.
The Surfriders mounted a comeback in the bottom of the sixth, closing to 12-11, but the Menehune built the lead to 14-11 in the seventh on an RBI double by Jimmy Strombach and Ric Fukushima's RBI single.
In the bottom half, Jarid Kawamoto's RBI single made it 14-12, Kamaile Santos was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 14-13, and Levi Manutai had a run-scoring single to tie the score before Ho's single finally ended it just before darkness fell.
