Five hikers rescued in Wahiawa Heights

Fire rescue personnel last night rescued five teenagers who became lost while hiking in the Wahiawa Heights area.

The two girls and three boys, ages 15 to 17, began their hike at the end of California Avenue about 7 p.m. They had walked along a stream for about an hour when they realized they were lost, said Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

The group called for help using a cellular phone, Soo said. He said there were no lights in the area, and firefighters on the ground had a difficult time finding the hikers.

But a crew on the Air One helicopter spotted the stranded hikers and lowered two rescue specialists. The helicopter then lifted the teens one at a time to a command post set up at 'Iliahi Elementary School.

Soo said none of the hikers were injured.

Body found near Makakilo

Police yesterday were awaiting the results of an autopsy of the body of a woman that was recovered Wednesday on Palehua Ridge above Makakilo.

Fire rescue crews assisted police on the seven-hour recovery operation that started about 9:30 a.m.

Police said they think the remains might be those of a missing person, said officer Joe Self of the Missing Persons Detail.

The Honolulu medical examiner said the remains were that of a woman and were mostly skeletal.

Woman killed in crash identified

A 60-year-old Waialua woman who died Tuesday morning when her car was broadsided by a pickup has been identified as Mary Florence Tvetene, the medical examiner said.

Tvetene's Saturn sedan was struck about 6:10 a.m. as she attempted a left turn from Naluahi Street onto Farrington Highway in Waialua. She died at the scene.

The driver of the pickup, a 31-year-old Mililani man, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

2 in hospital after Mililani accident

An 18-year-old man and 33-year-old woman were in fair and guarded conditions, respectively, at The Queen's Medical Center after their sport utility vehicle crashed into a tree in Mililani yesterday.

The crash happened just before 6 a.m. when a Nissan Xterra traveling westbound crashed on Meheula Parkway.

The driver suffered a broken leg, and his female passenger had possible internal injuries.
