Kane'ohe murder suspect released

By David Waite

Circuit Judge Gail Nakatani yesterday ordered a Kane'ohe man, who was indicted on a murder charge last week for allegedly failing to get proper medical care for his wife after she had a stroke, released temporarily under his sister's supervision.

Bail was initially set at $100,000 for Darren Yokotake, 43, who was indicted on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of his wife, Lisa Yokotake, 38, on March 21, 2001. The indictment accuses Darren Yokotake of failing to "seek or obtain" medical care for his wife, who had a stroke in November 2000.

City Deputy Prosecutor Rom Trader opposed the unusual request to allow a murder case defendant to remain free on supervised release, but he told Nakatani that it has been more than a year since Lisa Yokotake's death and there was nothing to suggest that Darren Yokotake would be a flight risk.

Darren Yokotake is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday and his attorney was given until April 15 to file a request for permanent temporary release, which would allow Yokotake to remain free through his trial.

Trader did not discuss specifics of the case against Yokotake during yesterday's hearing and declined to do so afterward. He said a more complete picture of what led to the charges against Yokotake will likely be presented at a yet-to-be-scheduled hearing on Yokotake's request for permanent supervised release.
