Mansho staff served subpoenas

An O'ahu grand jury will convene Wednesday to consider evidence presented in a criminal case against City Councilwoman Rene Mansho by the city prosecutor's office.

This week, the city prosecutor subpoenaed personnel records and other city documents kept by the City Council staff.

Council administrative official Clayton Wong confirmed yesterday that he received a subpoena Thursday requiring him to produce documents. Wong said he is required to appear before a grand jury on Wednesday. Wong's office handles various personnel and payroll functions for council members and their staff.

At least 10 current and former Mansho employees have been summoned to appear before the grand jury, some of those employees said. Some of the workers have been told by investigators that the charges being considered include allegations of theft and forgery.

City Deputy Prosecutor Randy Lee declined to comment on the investigation. Some of the subpoenas refer to a police investigation of fraud allegations against Mansho.

Mansho has been under scrutiny for various alleged ethics lapses for more than a year. Three government agencies, including the FBI, have investigated allegations that she misused her political office and campaign money. She declined to comment on the latest investigation.
