Maui police arrest ramming suspect

PUKALANI, Maui — Maui police yesterday arrested Llewellyn Foster, 37, who is suspected of ramming a patrol car during a chase last month in Kahakuloa.

Foster was arrested without incident at 7:45 a.m. at an Elilani Street home in Pukalani, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo. Police also seized a handgun, he said.

Foster is being held for a parole violation but is a suspect in several incidents, including the March 24 run-in with police in a Kahakuloa pasture. Officers reported seeing the man with a gun before he fled.

Cuomo said Foster also is believed to be connected to an incident last month in which shots were fired at a vehicle in Kahului and to a separate assault case.

Pot advocate's wife goes on trial

HILO, Hawai'i — The wife of gubernatorial candidate and marijuana advocate Jonathan Adler went on trial yesterday for taking marijuana to him in jail last year.

Jonathan Adler, 49, was in a Hilo jail Oct. 7 following his arrest for contempt of court when he asked to have his wife bring his medicine. Police called Nuan Suwat Adler, 45, and she showed up with a plastic container with her husband's marijuana in it. She was charged with promoting detrimental drugs.

Under Hawai'i's medical marijuana law, Adler had a prescription to use marijuana but his wife did not possess a medical card to be his caregiver, policeman Dion Santiago testified yesterday.

After a one-day session in which the prosecution finished its case, Judge Jeffrey Choi recessed the trial until July 12.

Jonathan Adler is running for governor on the Natural Law Party ticket and is executive director of the Hawai'i Medical Marijuana Institute.

Puna area regains residential water

HAWAIIAN BEACHES, Hawai'i — A disabled well pump was replaced yesterday by Miller & Lieb Water Co., restoring service to about 3,000 Puna residents who rely on the private water system.

Water service was disrupted Wednesday when the pump failed. A county tanker provided drinking water until the problem was fixed.
