McKinley stops Kaimuki

McKinley's Amanda Leopoldo slid past Kaimuki's Lovely Moyle during first-quarter action at McKinley last night. McKinley won, 35-19, to remain unbeaten in the OIA Eastern Division.

Taking its usual sweet and slow approach, the McKinley High School girls basketball team picked apart and then frustrated visiting Kaimuki, 35-19, last night to remain unbeaten (4-0) in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division.

Kaimuki falls to 2-2 after managing only five points on two field goals in the second half.

McKinley, which snapped Ka-laheo's 50-game OIA win streak last week, shares the East lead with Kahuku, a 36-35 winner over Moanalua last night.

"I told the girls that this was an even bigger game than Kalaheo," McKinley coach Jesse Victorino said. "Now that we've beaten Kalaheo, every game is big because we want to stay on top."

As they did against Kalaheo, the Tigers dictated the tempo last night by running a patient, deliberate offense. Kaimuki led 5-4 after one period, and the score was 14-14 at the half.

But in the second half, the Bulldogs' shooting went cold and McKinley center Amber Lee scored 10 points to help the Tigers pull away. Kaimuki's lone basket in the third quarter was a layup by Chyenna Souza with 3:40 remaining, and the Bulldogs would not score again until Kara Hayashida's 3-point basket with 1:15 left in the game.

Kaimuki was 2-of-15 from the field in the final 16 minutes.

In the meantime, McKinley spread the floor and methodically build its lead to 30-16.

Lee, a 6-foot-1 junior, finished with a game-high 18 points and 13 rebounds. Kaimuki's top scorers, Dalia Solia and Tyleen Tausaga, finished with two and three points, respectively.

"(McKinley) played very good defense, and they took some of our girls out of the game," Bulldogs coach Mona Fa'asoa said. "That's exactly what got to (us) — frustration. We just didn't play our game tonight."

Victorino said that was the result he was looking for.

"I think Dalia is one of the best athletes in the state, but we wanted to get her tired and take her out of her game," Victorino said. "When she's out of her game, Kaimuki gets out of sync, and that's what we wanted."

McKinley also frustrated the Bulldogs on offense, taking precious seconds off the clock before shooting only from inside 12 feet.

"We do repetitions in practice, over and over and over," Lee said. "Coach tells us to be patient, and shoot only when we see something wide open."

The OIA East title race, Victorino said, is still wide open.

"It'll be tough, because three of the East teams that probably should make the playoffs won't make it," Victorino said. "That's how strong it is this year."
