'Opihi picker swept to death

A 55-year-old man died yesterday after being swept from a North Shore rock face by a wave.

The man was picking 'opihi with his wife and nephew near 61-205 Kamehameha Highway when the wave swept him out, said Fire Capt. Richard Soo.

The nephew swam out after the man and took him to a rocky outcropping between the surf spots known as Marijuanas and Uppers.

Firefighters arrived and conducted CPR, but the man did not seem to be developing a pulse. He was pronounced dead at Wahiawa General Hospital.

Woman injured in cycle fall

A woman was rescued by firefighters and taken by military air ambulance yesterday to The Queen's Medical Center after a motorcycle went off a cliff near Ka'ena Point.

The woman was in guarded condition last night, a nursing supervisor said.

Capt. Richard Soo said the 22-year-old woman was a passenger on the motorcycle. The man who was driving lost control about 4 p.m. near where the paved road near Yokohama Bay turns to gravel, and the motorcycle went off the road and fell 20 feet down a cliff.

The man was not seriously injured but was treated on the spot for lacerations.

The woman had head, leg, arm and back injuries.

Firefighters put the woman in a litter basket for pickup by the Fire Department's helicopter.

Air 1 delivered her to a nearby beach park, where she was picked up by MAST and taken to Queen's.

Ka'ena Point search ended

The Coast Guard called off an ocean search beyond Ka'ena Point yesterday that had been launched Friday night after a woman reported seeing flares off Mokule'ia Beach Park.

The Coast Guard joined a Fire Department search of the area Friday night and alerts were broadcast to fishing boats in the area.

At first light yesterday a Coast Guard auxiliary pilot continued the search in his private airplane.

At 9 a.m. yesterday there had been no sightings of boaters in distress and no other reports of flares, Coast Guard Petty Officer 3rd Class David Mosley said.

Jellyfish invade Waikiki beaches

Waikiki yesterday saw the third biggest invasion of jellyfish in four years, city officials said.

Lifeguards posted warning signs as 850 jellyfish were counted at Hawai'i's premier tourist destination. About 45 people were treated for jellyfish stings at Waikiki and Ala Moana beaches.

The invasion also forced the closure of Hanauma Bay. The popular swimming area was shut down in the morning after 33 jellyfish were sighted, city spokeswoman Carol Costa said. The bay will remain closed until at least this morning, she said.

Correction: The jellyfish invasion at Waikiki Beach was the third largest in four years. A previous version of these briefs was incorrect.
