Roosevelt boys, Kaiser girls capture OIA relay crowns

Boys and girls championships were both decided in the 4x400-meter relays, the final events of the meet, yesterday at the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Relays at Mililani High Stadium.
Roosevelt won the boys 4x400 in the very fast time of 3 minutes, 26.90 seconds to secure a 72-64 victory over Radford, which finished second in the race.
Kaiser's relay victory appeared to tie the girls score at 50.
However, the results of the already-completed triple jump had not been posted. When they were calculated, sophomore Leila Abuzalaf's fifth place scored one point and gave Kaiser the championship.
Roosevelt's boys time in the 4x400 relay beat last year's state championship time of 3:27.18.
Kahuku junior Krisha Kai had the outstanding individual mark of the meet. She triple jumped 36 feet, 8¥ inches, well beyond the 36-foot-even jump she made to win the state championship last year.

TENNIS
• Mililani girls, Kaiser boys til titles: Mililani's girls won their ninth straight O'ahu Interscholastic Association championship yesterday, defeating Roosevelt 3-0.
Kaiser beat Mililani 3-1 for the boys team title. Both matches were played in near-perfect weather at Brigham Young University-Hawai'i in La'ie.
The girls contest ended with both first singles and first doubles still on the court because Mililani had clinched the best-of-five match. Only second doubles was close. Mililani's Jaymi Gamiao and Nicole Duvall had to go to a tie-breaker to beat Asia Ponciano and Lauren Hashimoto 6-2, 7-5.
In the regular season and playoffs, Mililani's girls won 49 points and lost 4. Kaiser's boys won 49 and lost 8.
It is Kaiser's first boys title since 1993. The last team to win a girls crown before Mililani's string began was Kaimuki in 1994.
