Mid-Pacific bounces back to top St. Louis

A day after suffering the season's biggest upset, the Mid-Pacific Institute baseball team returned to its winning ways last night with a 4-0 victory over St. Louis at Ala Wai Field.
MPI, which lost on Friday to previously winless Pac-Five, remains atop the Interscholastic League of Honolulu standings with an 8-1 record. St. Louis falls to 5-4.
"We were disappointed (Friday), but you gotta come back," said Mid-Pacific senior Pat McGuigan, who pitched a one-hitter last night. "You cannot dwell."
McGuigan struck out five and walked none. Owls catcher Matt Inouye drove in all four runs, with a single in the third inning and a three-run triple in the fourth.
Both times, mistakes that wouldn't show up in the box score proved costly for St. Louis. Inouye's third-inning single brought home Tyler Okamura, who almost got picked off of first base but made it safely to second after a soft throw.
On Inouye's bases-loaded triple, his line drive was misjudged and rolled all the way to the fence in center field.
"We didn't execute," St. Louis coach Dean Sato said. "I told our guys we can't be doing things like that, especially against a team that is fundamentally sound like Mid-Pac."
The run support was more than enough for McGuigan, who shut out Iolani on six hits in eight innings last week. The only hit he allowed last night was a first-inning single by Danny Lee.
"All the credit has to go to McGuigan," Sato said. "His ball moves so much; it's in and out. And that shortstop (Troy Hanzawa) is unbelievable. They just got ground balls to him, and it's an out."
Mid-Pacific committed one error.
"The defense played real well," McGuigan said. "My fastball and curve were pretty effective. I just tried to keep the ball down, keep it in spots and get ground balls."
Owls coach Dunn Muramaru said McGuigan has become MPI's Mr. Reliable.
"He is so consistent," Muramaru said. "He is there for us all the time."
