HPU splits two games in baseball

Pinch-hitter Casey Onaga hit a single up the middle to drive in pinch-runner Brian Hamilton in the seventh inning to give Hawai'i Pacific a 4-3 victory and a split of a doubleheader with host Cal State-Los Angeles.

Cal State-Los Angeles won the first game, 11-8.

In the second game, Hawai'i Pacific trailed 3-2 entering the seventh and final regular inning. With two outs, Wade Taguchi singled to left, went to second on a wild pitch and scored when Ikaika DuPont doubled down the left-field line. Hamilton pinch ran for DuPont and Onaga then hit his single for the go-ahead run.

Taguchi went 2-for-3, including a solo-homer to right in the first inning. Steve Stader pitched a complete game, striking out seven, walking one and allowing seven hits and one earned run.

In the first game, DuPont had three hits, including a double and two-run homer.

HPU is 18-23, Cal State-Los Angeles 9-32.


WATER POLO

• UCLA routs UH: Kelly Heuchan had three goals as 11 UCLA players scored as the Bruins defeated Hawai'i 17-5 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Duke Kahanamoku Athletic Complex last night.

UCLA, ranked No. 2 in the nation, is 16-3, 8-1 in the MPSF. No. 9 Hawai'i is 10-11 and 4-5.

UCLA rolled to 4-2 lead in the first quarter and shut out UH 4-0 in the second for a 8-2 lead.

Karin van Hoff and Tessa Curti each scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine.


SOFTBALL

• Hilo wins: The University of Hawai'i Hilo finished the first two rounds of the Tournament of Champions at Modesto, Calif., with a 2-1 victory over Western Oregon.

Hilo is 1-3 in the tournament, which ends today.

In other games involving Hawai'i teams, Central Washington defeated Chaminade (0-4 in the tournament), 1-0, and Hawai'i Pacific (2-1) defeated Sonoma State.


DRAGON BOAT RACING

• Looking for teams: Teams are being sought for the 7th annual AT&T Hawai'i Dragon Boat Festival on Aug. 3-4 at Ala Moana Beach Park.

The festival will have two race divisions: Cup Race for industry teams and Open.

Teams, consisting of 18 paddlers, will compete in single-elimination races. Boats, paddles and steersmen will be provided, and each team will give given approximately three practice sessions.

Entry fee is $200 per group if registration and payment are received by June 30. Late registration is $425.

QUARTERBACK CLUB

• UH coaches to speak: University of Hawai'i coaches Mike Wilton (men's volleyball), Riley Wallace (men's basketball) and Kevin Lempa (football defensive coordinator will speak at tomorrow's Honolulu Quarterback Club.

Lunch is at 11:30 a.m., followed by the meeting at noon at the Pagoda Restaurant.

Wallace and UH basketball guard Janka Gabrielova were named the club's Sportspersons of the Month for March. Both led their teams to postseason berths; the men in the NCAA Tournament and the women in the National Invitation Tournament. They will be honored tomorrow.
