Kahului crash kills motorcyclist

A Maui man was killed early yesterday when his motorcycle struck a car at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hukilike Street in Kahului. He was identified as Derrick S. Ogata, 27, of Kahului.

Police said Ogata was heading west on Dairy Road on his Honda motorcycle when he hit a 1998 Honda Accord trying to turn left onto Dairy Road from Hukilike Street.

The impact threw Ogata into a 1999 Isuzu Rodeo heading east on Dairy Road, police said. Ogata, who was not wearing a helmet, died at the scene.

No one else was injured.

It was Maui County's third traffic death this year.
