Hilo, Chaminade lose softball games

Despite outhitting Cal State-San Bernardino, the University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team lost its final game of the Tournament of Champions, 7-4, yesterday in Modesto, Calif.

Nancy Vega, Wendy Layton and Leinani Hashida each batted 2-for-4 for the Vulcans, who finished the tournament with a 1-4 record. They are 28-16 overall.

Also yesterday, Western Oregon defeated Chaminade, 1-0. The Silverswords finished the tournament 0-5 and 19-22 overall.

Hawai'i Pacific (2-3, 20-14) completed tournament play Saturday.

UC Davis defeated Western New Mexico, 1-0, to win the tournament.

WRESTLING

• Vivas third in 'World': Chanel Vivas of Kahuku High placed third in the 105-pound weight class at the Reno World of Wrestling Championships at the Reno Livestock Events Center in Nevada, this weekend.

Other Hawai'i wrestlers who competed were Barry Ashberry (fifth place, 130 pounds) of Kahuku High, and Patrick Stachel (fourth, 171) and Christian Kikuchi (fifth, 140) of Kamehameha.

GOLF

• UHS' Toyama shoots 67: Travis Toyama of University High shot a 6-under 67 at 'Ewa Villages Golf Course in Interscholastic League of Honolulu competition Saturday.

Toyama finished three strokes ahead of Christian Akau of Kamehameha.

Toyama's previous best was a 70 at Pearl Country Club and his average on the season is 70.8.
