COOK'S TIPS
Restore shine to old, rusted cast-iron pans

If you have an old, rusted cast iron pan, don't throw it out. Sand down the rusted parts, inside and out, with sandpaper or steel wool, working from medium-grain to fine-grain until rust is gone. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Coat the pan lightly inside and out with solid shortening; place a foil-lined rimmed cookie sheet on the bottom shelf of the oven to catch drips and place the pan on the second shelf for one hour; wipe away excess oil with paper toweling and repeat. Voila!
