Leilehua controls West basketball

By Wes Nakama
Advertiser Staff Writer

The Leilehua High School girls basketball team took control of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Western Division race last night, rolling past defending state champion 'Aiea, 27-17, at 'Aiea.

The Mules improved to 5-0, while Na Ali'i dropped to 4-2. Leilehua, which went 2-10 in the preseason, is the only unbeaten team in the West.

"We played tough teams in the preseason — Iolani, Maryknoll, Maui," Mules coach Elroy Dumlao said. "We didn't play badly, just our conditioning hurt us and we were rushing into things."

Those things were not a problem last night, as Leilehua grabbed early control with an 8-0 run in the first period and never looked back. Using a wide 2-3 zone, the Mules limited 'Aiea's shot opportunities and held Na Ali'i to two points in the second quarter and three points in the third.

"They played good defense," 'Aiea coach Fran Villarmia-Kahawai said. "They denied the passing lanes, and we didn't pass very well."

Leilehua guards Nachelle Scott and Pikake Nutter-Gaudet came up with several steals, and Scott was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line in the second quarter after being fouled in the transition.

She finished the game 8-of-10 from the line and scored a game-high 12 points.

"She usually shoots like 40 percent," Dumlao said. "She usually scores on layups off the press."

The press wasn't necessary for the Mules last night, as Na Ali'i struggled in their halfcourt offense. After Jasmine Dias' second 3-point basket with three minutes remaining in the first period, 'Aiea went seven minutes before its next field goal, a jumper by Marissa Komomua.

Na Ali'i's next basket was Noelani Colburn's 3-pointer 90 seconds into the second half, and 'Aiea would not score again until 5:36 left in the game.

That's three points in 14 minutes, and five points in 21 minutes.

All five of 'Aiea's starters last year graduated, including two who are playing NCAA Division I basketball. The only returnees who were in last year's rotation are Dias and Colburn.

"We're not as talented as we were last year, obviously," Villarmia-Kahawai said. "We can't do the same things, because we don't have the same personnel. We're still adjusting to these girls' abilities. But I told them that they should be pretty good, because they went up against (last year's starters) in practice every day.

"When you're going up every day against players of that caliber, you're getting better, even though you may not realize it."

Dumlao said it's a testament to Na Ali'i's coaching staff that they still are in contention despite a brand new lineup.

"They're doing a good job," Dumlao said. "They're patient. We came in with a lot of respect for them, even though they don't have the same players as last year."
